This photo series takes you into the unique life within a student house—a place where diverse people come together and, sometimes (with a bit of luck), close friendships are formed.
It all begins on the house viewing night. Candidates try their best to show their most social side, hoping to secure the room. But how well can you truly get to know someone in a short conversation? And how strange is it that you choose someone to live in your safe space based on that?

In this series, I document how people from different backgrounds find their place in a shared house. Through photographs of my housemates’ rooms, without showing the residents themselves, their personalities are subtly conveyed. For the viewer, however, it remains a guessing game which elements reveal something about the resident and which are influenced by outside factors. To what extent does someone’s personal space reflect their personality?
An important part of the series features a room filled with moving boxes, symbolizing the impermanence of student housing. Unlike the parental home, the student house is only temporary. Everyone leaves eventually to begin the “adult life.” The connection that comes with living together also involves letting go and starting anew. With each new housemate, bonds have to be rebuilt, and the dynamic of the house changes.
This photo series not only shows the personal differences between residents but also the constant change that comes with living in a student house. For me and my housemates, the series holds emotional value because it reflects our lives and connections. For the viewer, however, it is merely a glimpse into a concept that may feel distant to them—a thought-provoking exploration of interpretation and questions about what defines us, and what the concept of a “student house” really entails.

Deze fotoserie neemt je mee in het bijzondere leven binnen een studentenhuis, een plek waar uiteenlopende mensen samenkomen en, soms (met een beetje geluk), hechte vriendschappen ontstaan.
Het begint allemaal op de hospiteeravond. De kandidaten doen hun best om hun meest sociale kant te laten zien, in de hoop de kamer te bemachtigen. Maar hoe goed kun je iemand écht leren kennen in één kort gesprek? Hoe gek is het eigenlijk dat je op basis daarvan iemand kiest om in jou veilige plek te komen wonen?
In deze serie leg ik vast hoe mensen met verschillende achtergronden hun plek vinden in een gedeeld huis. Door middel van foto's van de kamers van mijn huisgenoten, zonder de bewoners zelf in beeld, wordt hun persoonlijkheid subtiel weergegeven. Het blijft voor de kijker echter een gok welke elementen iets over de bewoner onthullen en welke elementen invloeden van buitenaf zijn. In hoeverre weerspiegelt iemands persoonlijke ruimte diens persoonlijkheid?
Een belangrijk onderdeel van de serie is een kamer gevuld met verhuisdozen, die de vergankelijkheid van het studentenhuis symboliseert. Anders dan het ouderlijk huis is het studentenhuis slechts tijdelijk. Iedereen vertrekt op een gegeven moment om aan het ‘grote-mensen-leven’ te beginnen. De verbondenheid die samen wonen met zich mee brengt houdt ook loslaten en opnieuw beginnen in. Met elke nieuwe huisgenoot moet je weer opnieuw een band opbouwen en verandert ook de dynamiek in het huis.
Deze fotoserie toont niet alleen de persoonlijke verschillen tussen de bewoners, maar ook de voortdurende verandering die samenleven in een studentenhuis met zich meebrengt. Voor mij en mijn huisgenoten heeft de serie emotionele waarde omdat het onze levens en connecties weerspiegelt. Voor de toeschouwer is het echter slechts een inkijkje in een concept dat voor hen misschien ver weg staat, het vormt een gedachte spel van interpretaties en vragen over wat ons definieert en hoe het concept “studentenhuis” werkelijk in elkaar zit.
